The Ujana TVET Advocacy Program

Changing the Narrative, Shaping the Future of Work.

Championing policy reform and public awareness to make Technical and Vocational Education a first-choice career path for Kenyan youth.

Description:

Through Advocacy, Ujana successfully drives campaigns to meet the intended outcomes of an organisation. The program components are in these strategic priorities namely;

TVET ADVOCACY – Creating mass awareness about TVET at the local community level where the information gaps are wide and there are negative perceptions and mindset about TVET, more so for female gender.  Use of social media and digital marketing tools to reach mass audiences.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – Raising young leaders in each local community by equipping them with leadership skills  and  21st century life skills.

Our TVET Advocacy Program is the engine of systemic change. While we train youth with skills, we simultaneously work to ensure the ecosystem around them is supportive and thriving. This program targets the root causes of skills gaps and youth unemployment by engaging policymakers, industry leaders, and the public. We conduct cutting-edge research, publish policy briefs, and run nationwide campaigns to elevate the status and quality of TVET in Kenya. Our goal is to influence education policy, secure greater investment in technical training, and partner with industries to ensure training standards meet market demands, creating a sustainable pipeline of opportunity for every young person.

Program Results & Impact:

  • Policy Influence: Directly contributed to the development of 3 county-level TVET integration policies,

  • Public Perception Shift: Our campaigns have reached over 2 million Kenyans, with pre- and post-campaign surveys showing a 25% increase in positive perception of TVET careers among youth and parents.

  • Industry Alignment: Facilitated 15 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between TVET institutions and private sector partners, directly linking curriculum to employment needs.

  • Research Leadership: Published 5 seminal research papers on Kenya’s skills gap, which are now referenced by the Ministry of Education and industry bodies.
